The feline version of Smokey Bear was found wandering out of the Butte fire Monday.
The mountain lion cub appeared to be injured when volunteers noticed the animal walking in the area of Blossom Lane near Mokelumne Hill in Calaveras County.
The male, 4-month-old cub was thin at about 9 pounds. He was also burned on his face and the pads of his paws.
Volunteers, who captured him without much difficulty, turned him over to a local veterinarian. The cub was then transported to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s investigation lab at Nimbus.

There, Fish and Wildlife staff determined that the cub’s fragile condition makes his prognosis guarded. He also has an eye injury.
A state veterinarian will monitor his health and hoped-for recovery.
