Sacramento Mayor-elect Darrell Steinberg endorsed Elk Grove City Council candidate Maureen Craft on Monday, lending big-name support to a political newcomer.

Craft, 48, is challenging incumbent Steven Detrick for the District 3 seat on the council of the city of 160,000 in suburban Sacramento. Detrick, 60, was first elected to the council in 2008 and re-elected in 2012.

“Maureen Craft is a small-business owner and community advocate who is the exact kind of pragmatic progressive leader that we need on the Elk Grove City Council,” Steinberg said in a press release. “As a state senator, I was proud to represent Elk Grove, and I’m proud to endorse Maureen Craft’s campaign for City Council.”

Two Sacramento city councilmen have endorsed Craft, Allen Warren and Larry Carr, as well as the Sacramento County Democratic Committee and several other democratic groups.

Detrick has endorsements from Assemblyman Jim Cooper, the Elk Grove Police Officers Association, the Sacramento County Republican Party, the Elk Grove Chamber PAC, and Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli.
